Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant

The Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant is a government scheme designed to bring empty or derelict houses back into use. Whether you want to create your own home or prepare a property for rental, the grant helps reduce the cost of essential works and makes refurbishment more affordable.

Homeowners can receive up to €50,000 towards the cost of renovating a vacant property, and if the building is derelict, that amount can increase to €70,000. In some cases, there are even additional supports for homes on remote islands or for specialist conservation work on traditional buildings.

To qualify, the property must have been vacant for at least two years and built before 2007. The grant is open to people who will use the house as their main residence or make it available for long-term rental. It cannot be used by companies or property developers.
The funding can cover almost every stage of refurbishment — from structural repairs like roofing and insulation, to plumbing, electrics, kitchens, bathrooms, and even professional fees for architects or surveyors. In other words, it’s designed to support you in turning an unused property into a modern, comfortable home.
