Remove or Cover Furniture
Clear out small items like lamps, books, and electronics first. Move large furniture pieces to the centre of the room and cover them with protective dust sheets or plastic. This keeps them safe from dust, drips, and paint splatter while giving your painter room to work efficiently.

Take Down Decorations
Remove curtains, blinds, wall art, mirrors, and hanging fixtures. Anything left on the wall can slow down the job or get damaged. Also consider removing switch plates and socket covers for a cleaner edge and better finish, or ask your painter to do so.
Clean the Surfaces
Even though the walls may look fine, they often hold dust, oils, or kitchen residue that can affect how well the paint sticks. Wipe down walls with a damp cloth, especially around high-traffic areas, switches, and radiators. No need for heavy scrubbing a light clean is often enough.

Improve Ventilation
Proper airflow helps paint dry faster and reduces lingering smells. If weather allows, open windows or keep interior doors ajar to promote cross-ventilation. If painting in colder months, try using fans or dehumidifiers to encourage airflow safely and efficiently.
Communicate with Your Painter
Let your decorator know exactly what’s being painted, which colours go where, and any items you’d like left untouched. A quick walkthrough before the job begins helps prevent confusion and ensures expectations are met. The more detail you provide, the smoother the project will run.
